How this site is
researched and funded

Sourcing, independence, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Who is responsible

CryptoGrid is written and run by Neil McDonald, who is accountable for everything published here. There is no syndicated content, no scraped filler and no guest posts.

How the writing is produced

We would rather tell you this than have you guess. Articles on this site are drafted with the help of AI, against a brief that names the primary sources to work from — HMRC's Cryptoassets Manual and current published rates for tax, the Octopus Energy public API for electricity, the chains' own endpoints for network data. Every figure is then checked back against that primary source by an automated verification pass before the piece is published, and anything that cannot be sourced is cut rather than hedged.

That process is fast, and it is good at arithmetic and at citing what it used. It is not a substitute for a named human being answerable for the result, which is why one is named above. Corrections come to a real person at a real address and get made.

The calculators are not written this way. They are code, and the methodology page sets out every formula and constant in them so the output can be checked by hand.

How we source figures

The site's core output is arithmetic, not opinion, so sourcing matters more than prose. Tax guidance comes from HMRC's Cryptoassets Manual and currently published rates. Electricity costs come from the Octopus Energy public API at half-hourly granularity. Network data comes from public chain endpoints and established explorers. Coin prices come from CoinPaprika. Every one of those is named, with the formulas, on the methodology page.

We do not republish press releases, and we do not cite a rewritten press release as independent confirmation of anything.

Independence

No affiliate commission from exchanges, hardware vendors, energy suppliers or custody providers. No referral links. No paid placement, and no company has been shown a piece before publication. The site carries Google AdSense advertising; advertisers have no editorial input.

If that ever changes, this page changes before the change goes live, and any affected page carries a disclosure at the top.

Accuracy and corrections

Pages that depend on rates, allowances or tariffs are reviewed when those change, and dated when they are. Tell us about anything wrong at hello@cryptogrid.co.uk, and:

We do not quietly edit a page to fix a substantive error. If it was wrong, the page says it was wrong.

Use of AI

AI tools are used for drafting and research on this site. They are not used as a source.

Every figure, rate, threshold and calculation is checked against the primary source named on the methodology page before it is published — HMRC for tax, the Octopus Energy API for tariffs, and the chains' own endpoints for network data. Where a claim cannot be traced back to one of those, it does not go up.

We say so because a site publishing numbers that people may act on should be straightforward about how it is made.

What this site is not

CryptoGrid publishes information and calculators. It does not publish financial advice, tax advice or investment recommendations, and nothing here should be treated as any of those. Crypto assets are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and are not regulated for consumer protection in the UK. You can lose everything you put in.
